Overview

In a story set years in the past, Himura Yuu is a studious and diligent young man intent solely on maintaining his top academic position at Otowa Academy. One day, he meets a mysterious girl named Amamiya Yuuko, who, to his surprise, recognizes him. Memories of a distant childhood, memories rather left forgotten...meeting Yuuko again will force Yuu to confront the regrets and sorrows of their collective pasts and presents. In the present, Kuze Shuuichi may seem like a womanizer, but upon closer inspection, is a man who would rather be left alone. Hayama Mizuki, however, is not the type of girl who would let him be, especially after hearing the beautiful sounds of his violin performance. As Mizuki attempts to become closer to him, Kuze attempts to push her away—the tale of their budding relationship is darkened with undertones of an imminent tragedy.

ストーリーは二部・六章構成で成り立っており、1作目にあたる『ef - the first tale.』には序章と広野紘・宮村みやこ・新藤景・雨宮優子らを中心にした物語第一部前編（1、2章）が、2作目にあたる『ef - the latter tale.』には新藤千尋・麻生蓮治・火村夕らを中心にした物語第一部後編（3章）と物語第二部（4章）、終章が収録されている。第一部で『ef』という作品のテーマが提示され、第二部で物語が収束されるという章立てとなっている。それぞれの章が一つの物語として完結し、かつすべての章が組み合わさった時『ef - a fairy tale of the two.』という1つの物語が明かされるようになっている。
