Overview
Oshin comes from a family of poor rice farmers. Her father and brother must work in the fields and her grandmother and mother, who is expecting another child, barely have enough to eat. In order to make ends meet for her family, 7-year-old Oshin gives up school and decides to become a servant in the household of a wealthy family, where she faces trials and tribulation beyond her worst fears. 1983年（昭和58年）早春、北へ向かう列車の中である老婦人が座っていた。彼女の名は田倉（たのくら）しん。 三重県志摩半島各地に16店舗を構えるスーパーマーケットチェーンの創業者・経営者であった彼女は、デパート級の大規模店となる第17号店新規開店というめでたい日に行方を眩ましてしまった。家族一同が騒然とする中、おしんとは血こそ繋がらないものの、孫として育てられた大学生・八代圭（やしろ けい）は昔、おしんが語ってくれた思い出話を頼りに、山形県の銀山温泉へ捜索の旅に出る。 その地でおしんを探し当てた圭は今すぐ三重へ戻るよう説得するが、おしんは帰ろうとせず山形の山奥にある廃村に行こうとしており、話を聞かない。だが圭はおしんの願いを叶えてあげたいという気持ちになり、彼女をおぶって雪深い山道を進み廃村へと辿り着いた。そこがおしんの生まれ故郷であり、雪の中で廃屋となっていた我が家を見たおしんの眼には涙が浮かんでいた。 そうして、おしんは圭にこの家出は自分の80年以上の人生で一体何を得て、何を失ってしまったか。また、自分のことだけしか考えない経営方針に突き進む息子・仁（ひとし）を、どこでそういう息子にしてしまったのか、を振り返るための旅だと打ち明ける。 以下の区分けと副題は総集編とセルビデオ化の際に便宜上付けられたものを用いる。本放送時には放送回のみ表示された。
