二つの大国が冷戦状態にある世界。その両国の間に存在する島国、ニル・カムイが本作の舞台となっている。 拮抗状態にあるその世界には七匹の竜が存在し、その内の一匹である「赤の竜」がニル・カムイに存在した。 その「赤の竜」が原因不明ながら突如発狂し、複数の村を壊滅させる脅威と化した。 プレイヤーたちは「赤の竜」を討伐するための非公式部隊として集結することとなる。 ケイオスドラゴンプロジェクトでの赤竜戦役は上文がベースであり、その10年後においてはケイオスと呼ばれる軍勢によってさらに国家が分裂した状態となっており、ケイオスに対抗できる記憶喪失の主人公が登場した所から開始される。
