Overview
In Edo period Japan (1603 to 1868), a strange new disease called the Redface Pox has begun to prey on the country's men. Within eighty years of the first outbreak, the male population has fallen to a quarter of the total female population. Women have taken on all the roles traditionally granted to men, even that of the Shogun. The men, precious providers of life, are carefully protected and the most beautiful of the men are sent to serve in the Shogun's Inner Chambers. 徳川三代将軍家光の時代、関東のとある山村で熊に致命傷を負わされた少年を発端に、赤面疱瘡と呼ばれる奇病が流行り始める。若い男にだけ感染するこの病は致死率80％、瞬く間に感染拡大し、約80年経過した頃には日本の男子人口は女子の1/4にまで減少していた。男子は子種を持つ大切な宝物扱い、女が全ての労働を担い家業を継ぎ、将軍職も三代目以降女が継ぐことに。夫を持てない貧しい女達は花街で種を付け、婿取りは富裕層の特権となる。 その頂点として将軍が囲った、俗に美男3000人と謳われる女人禁制の城──それが大奥である。 本作はその起こりから終焉までを、八代将軍吉宗の時代を起点とし、それ以前の出来事は彼女が読む『没日録』の内容としてほぼ時系列順に描いている。 なお、本項では便宜上、将軍の代替わりで区切って記載する。
