爛熟期を迎えつつある帝政ローマ。当時、コロシアムでは古代ボクシングが興行されていた。そこで選手として戦う奴隷たちは拳奴（けんど）と呼ばれ、過酷な環境の中で闘いを繰り広げているのだった。本編の主人公である拳奴セスタスは、体格に劣りながらも天性のスピードと師ザファルの教えたテクニックにより、難敵を打破していく。その闘いぶりが若きカエサル・ネロの目に止まり、謁見を許されるが、それを契機としてセスタスは運命の渦の中に巻き込まれていくこととなる。
