Overview

Spring time in April and the last of the cherry blossoms are still in bloom. The usually aloof bookworm with no interest in others comes across a book in a hospital waiting room. Handwritten on the cover are the words: "Living with Dying." He soon discovers that it is a diary kept by his very popular and genuinely cheerful classmate, Sakura Yamauchi, who reveals to him that she is secretly suffering from a pancreatic illness and only has a limited time left. It is at this moment that she gains just one more person to share her secret. Trying to maintain a normal life as much as possible, Sakura is determined to live her life to the fullest until the very last day. Synopsis 日本語

主人公である「僕」は病院で偶然「共病文庫」というタイトルの本を拾う。その本は「僕」のクラスメイトである山内桜良がつづっていた秘密の日記帳で、彼女の余命が膵臓の病気により、もう長くはないことが書かれていた。「僕」はその本の中身を興味本位で覗いたことにより、家族以外で唯一桜良の病気を知る人物となった。「桜良の死ぬ前にやりたいこと」に付き合っていくうちに、「僕」、桜良という正反対の性格の2人が、お互いに自分には欠けている部分にそれぞれ憧れを持つようになり、次第に心を通わせて成長していく。そして「僕」は「人を認める人間に、人を愛する人間になること」を決意。桜良は、恋人や友達を必要としない「僕」が、初めて関わり合いを持ちたい人に自分を選んでくれたことにより「初めて私自身として必要とされている、初めて私が、たった一人の私であると思えた」と感じていった。しかし、桜良は4週間の入院治療から解放されたその日に通り魔に刺されて、余命を全うすることなく亡くなってしまう。桜良の死に衝撃を受けた「僕」は、通夜にも葬儀にも参列できなかった。10日ほど過ぎてから、僕と彼女の始まりで彼女の物語の数ページが記されているかもしれない「共病文庫」を読まなければならないと思い立ち、桜良の家を訪れる。
