Overview

In humanity's distant future, two interstellar states—the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance—are embroiled in a never-ending war. The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Müsel and Yang Wen Li as they rise to power and fame in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance.

遠未来の銀河系を舞台に、数多くの英雄たちによる攻防と権謀術数を、ラインハルト・フォン・ローエングラムとヤン・ウェンリーの2人を軸に描くスペースオペラ。 田中が設定した銀河の歴史の1エピソードであり、対立する陣営のイデオロギー、人物像、権謀術数、歴史、人物模様などの群像劇の流れを前面に出し、「後世の歴史家」の観点から叙述することで、歴史小説のような体裁をとっている。作者はのちに架空の歴史小説『アルスラーン戦記』を発表することになるが、この『銀河英雄伝説』においても、作者の歴史・文学の知識は色濃く反映されており、中国史をはじめとする歴史上のエピソードがしばしば顔をのぞかせている。 架空の要素としては、執筆時の現行技術の延長線上である「宇宙艦艇」「宇宙要塞」「ビーム兵器」などが登場するが、運用法は執筆時の戦争における地上の戦線や陣形などの概念の延長上にある。 「超能力」「魔法」「未知のエネルギー」「戦闘用ロボット」「アンドロイド」「クローン人間」といった世のありかたを大きく変える要素や、「異星人種族」を登場させなかったのは、史実、あるいはそれを基にした過去の文学作品を念頭に、人間同士の営みから生み出される歴史ドラマとしての構成を意図したためである。一方で「超光速通信」「ワープ航法」「重力制御」「サイボーグ（義手や義眼など）」といった執筆時における非科学的な要素は登場している。
