Overview

Elliptical Orbit: Fifteen years after its last contact with our world, a space freighter known as the Flying Dutchman requests permission to dock at a remote moon base. 20世紀後半に始まった人類の宇宙開発は、有人宇宙飛行・宇宙ステーション打ち上げと続き、地球外生命の痕跡も発見される。月で有用な鉱物資源が発見された事で、自給自足の宇宙開発が可能となり、人類は太陽系を席巻していく。さらに恒星間航行の試みも行われた。凍結した精子と卵子を積んだ宇宙船をコンピュータで制御して、生存に適した惑星が認められた時点で受精させ育成する「人類播種計画」や、地球人類の文化の全てと宇宙の知的生命へのメッセージとを記憶した外宇宙探査システムがそれである。人工冬眠の技術も実用化された。 21世紀初頭に海王星軌道のはるか外側で発見された新惑星ルシファー（魔王星）は、太陽に拮抗しうる質量を備えた反物質星であった。それは強大なエネルギー源となり、人工ブラックホールを利用した超空間航法「ミュー駆動」による瞬時恒星間飛行が可能になった。「人類播種計画」に種を提供したロビンソン夫妻の子孫たちは、代々宇宙事業に加わりまだ生まれぬ「子供たち」を援助し続ける事になる。外宇宙に進出した人類は、次々と驚異的な天体や生命体と出会っていく。その一方で、宇宙で生まれ育ち、IQも平均寿命も旧来の人類よりはるかに高い「新世代」が、続々と誕生していた。 24世紀には人類は半径150光年の宇宙に進出する一方で、地球外文明はいまだに発見されなかった。そして多くの植民地は予想外の障害にあって放棄されあるいは壊滅していった。疲れ始めた人類は、地球外文明を探す最後の計画「グランド・セチ計画」を実施し、成果がなければ外宇宙から撤退しようとしていた。ロビンソン一族の末裔アダム・ロビンソンがその計画に参加した頃、「子供たち」はくじら座タウ星系の惑星に到着する。同じ頃、決して光速度以下に速度を落とさない超光速粒子タキオンになぞらえ自らをタキオニアンと呼ぶ「新世代」の一団が、銀河縦断に向け旅立とうとしていた。アダムとタキオニアンと「子供たち」はタウ星系でめぐりあうが、再びそれぞれの道に別れていくのであった。
