太平洋戦争末期、沖縄に展開する米機動部隊に抗するために編成された桜花特別攻撃隊であったが、重厚な米軍の邀撃態勢と桜花そのものの運用の困難さもあって、思ったような成果をあげられずにいた。そんな中、図らずも桜花による特攻に頓挫し、ただひとり基地に生還した野中少尉は、引き続き特攻を行うため新たな一式陸攻搭乗員たちと相見える。一式陸攻の機長・山岡中尉は戦争で死んだ大勢の若者たちがあと30年生きていたらと思いを馳せるが、仲間を失った米軍の搭乗員たちも同じ思いであった。翌日、再びの出撃となった桜花特別攻撃隊だったが、米軍の激しい迎撃に遭い、野中と桜花を搭載した一式陸攻は米艦隊に接触する以前に被弾・炎上する。桜花と自分を投棄して逃げろと懇願する野中であったが一式陸攻は飛び続け、ついに米艦隊の目視圏内まで到達することに成功し、桜花を切り離した。バラバラになって燃え墜ちていく一式陸攻を背に、野中を乗せた桜花はロケットエンジンを点火し米空母への特攻を成し遂げたのだった。損害を受けた米空母の艦長は広島に原子爆弾が投下されたことを知り「おれたちも、きちがいか...... 敵も味方も、みんなきちがいだ...」と呟き、爆沈する米空母と運命を共にする。
